TIRUCHI: Two students of Anna University of Technology – Tiruchi main campus, Vigneshwaramoorthy and Ratheesh of Electronics and Communications Engineering department, have won laurels at prestigious events for evolving a new model for detecting ammunition and narcotics.

Their idea, expected to be of use to prevent smuggling of these materials through airports, is of an interdisciplinary nature, involving application of high-end concepts in the fields of Chemistry, Physics and Electronics and Communication, according to a university release.

The students won the Best Innovator 2010 Award at a recent technical meeting conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry at Chennai.

They had earlier wrested the Best Innovative Project award at PEACE (Projects of Electronics and Communication Engineers) conducted by the university, and at WAVES 2011 conducted by the College of Engineering, Guindy.

The normal metal cum x-ray scanner and ionisation chamber used in airports for security system are not quite sensitive to liquid explosives; the disadvantages in the approach (wherein a rod with sponge at one end is inserted in hot chamber with predetermined database to check presence of narcotic and explosives) are in the forms of destructive testing and social alarm, according to the students.

The model for detection of ammunition, narcotics, gold and other restricted articles integrates the usage of radiation within the safety limit of exposure for human hazards. The predefined signature of the restricted articles, according to them, has multifarious spectrum depending on the radiation.

The restricted articles are detected by a series of automated communication and peripherals, they explained.

Felicitating the students, the Vice-Chancellor P. Devadas Manoharan said the students undertook the project under the Innovaut Club with technical support from J. Raja, Head, ECE Department. The students were guided by Assistant Professors M. Bhuvaneswari and B. Manikandan
